"I like the large CX-12 moulded one-piece mouthpiece and body a lot but then my students always told me I have a big mouth! :) The CX-12 is definitely the best harp for maintenance in my book. The first time I saw one in use I watched Bob Hodgson pull his apart and give it a quick clean between numbers on stage at our National Folk Festival and was most impressed. Bob likes them because he plays classical stuff REALLY fast and thus finds it difficult to not end up with a fair bit of saliva floating around in the harp. Bob was the first person to take the time to teach me properly about harp maintenance and thinking of him has me all nostalgic so I've just been looking through some old pics. At right is a pic of Bob playing his CX-12 at the NFF when I first saw him. A few minutes after this pic was taken he pulled the harp apart with his bare hands, put it back together again and played on. Dane is a professional systems engineer, academic and musician who has played harmonica for over forty years. He currently plays harmonica and mandolin with a celtic/folk/blues band, Headland and a celtic/gypsy band, The Gypsy Tarts. Dane has researched and practiced harmonica maintenance and tuning in earnest for the last five years (since retiring from full-time professional work), and during this time has often been privileged to meet and learn from some of Australia's premier harmonica artists and technicians. On the qualifications side of things, Dane has undergraduate degrees in Engineering and Business, and post-graduate qualifications in Information Technology and Education. He works as a part-time academic these days and though he loves teaching computer engineering he enjoys himself much more when working on instruments and playing music!
Chromatic Harmonicas
"The Chromatic harmonica is a type of harmonica that uses a button-activated sliding bar to redirect air from the hole in the mouthpiece to the selected reed-plate desired. This harp is used for Celtic, Classical, and Jazz, as well as many other styles. Traditionally these are made so that when the button is not pressed, an altered diatonic major scale of the key of the harmonica is available and depressing the button accesses the same scale a semi-tone higher in each hole, thus giving an instrument capable of playing the 12 notes of the Western chromatic scale. At MandoHarp we play the instruments we sell! Each of our musician and craft associates has over thirty years experience within their area of expertise. MandoHarp supplies and repairs reed and string instruments for local music shops and individual musicians - we sell to our friends. At MandoHarp our pimary areas of expertise are Mandolins and Harmonicas, hence our name. We also have contracted associates who work with a wide range of instruments, especially folk. This is our first foray onto the internet and we look forward to meeting many new musical friends here. At MandoHarp we appreciate fine instruments and we want you to have them!

All MandoHarp instruments are tracked from the moment of their original creation or purchase. Each instrument is assessed by an expert musician when received and again before offering it for sale. A brief report is written and stored in our database for each item, noting paticularly our expert assessment on receipt, any work performed on the instrument and its final condition.
