Wonderful first album from New Zealand professional Harmonica player Nola Mills.
Self taught harmonica virtuoso Nola Mills began playing harmonica at the age of five in Christchurch. Nola formed an intimate relationship with jazz standards while immersed in the jazz-rich musical surroundings of her Trombonist father, Ray O'Daniels. During the 1960's Nola was featured in many concerts and night spots to considerable acclaim. Marriage then presented Nola with an invidious choice and she bravely decided her family came first, consigning her much-loved harmonicas to virtual oblivion for over thirty years.
By 1995, with her young family off her hands and time to mull over new directions, Nola reinstated her instruments and (encouraged by Christchurch vocalist Malcolm McNeill) began practicing with a view to performing in public again. Her first album "Free, Reedy and Live" is a tribute to those refound talents of an age gone by. Accompanied by founding Christchurch Jazz School staff members, Bob Heinz (guitar), Ted Meager (drums) and Tom Rainey (keyboards), with Honours graduate Richie Pickard (bass), Nola stretches out in a display of catchy standards in live performance. |

Nola's concert took place as part of the C.P.I.T. Jazz School's regular Monday lunch-hour performances. It is hoped that the spirit present in the live performance and celebration of these standards reaches out to you, the listener, and gives you as much pleasure in reception as it gave all those involved in the delivery.
